Notes
The Whippet resembles a small greyhound, but has most likely been crossed with Italian Greyhounds, as well as Bedlington Terrier (once there were wirehaired Whippets). It is believed to be an old breed, and a painting by Jean Baptiste Oudys (1686-1755) show a beautiful Whippet-like dog.
The Whippet was originally kept as a racing dog by poor mine workers, and people as a general did not think too highly of the breed. It wasn't until the Duchess of Newscastle showed the breed interest that it became 'clean'. The Whippet was recognized in 1890.
The Whippet is a well balanced combination of muscle and strength, combined with elegance and beautiful lines. It is built for speed and working ability. The head is long, thin, with little stop. The eyes have an alert expression. The body has a very deep chest, with a clear arch over the topline. Straight frontlegs with well angulated hind - the dog should cover a lot of ground. The tail is long and gradually thinning towards the tip. The coat is short, fine and close-laying.
