Coat

Tan: Black (35) with Cream (45) Orange (65) Tan (105) in the traditional pattern.
Grizzle: Grey or Red grizzle (regular).
Shading on the body can only be present in the form of tipping in this breed (shading on tail, head and ears can be solid coloured).
Sable: Red sable is accepted in any of the patterns.
Red (55) is an additional accepted base colour.
Shading on the body can only be present in the form of tipping in this breed (shading on tail, head and ears can be solid coloured).
Masking: All of the above may be masked with Black (35) (smaller or regular mask).
Urajiro: Optional in tanpoints, required in sables and grizzles.
White Markings: White (15) allowed on all of the above as trim (trim on the legs may extend up and include the lower legs).
Ticking/Roaning: Slight ticking allowed.

Notes

The Shiba Inu is the smallest of the Japanese spitzes. It lived seperated from other breeds and has therefore looked the same for many years. The Shiba originates from the Mino and Shunshu areas, and was originally a hunter for small game and birds. It was proclaimed a national symbol in 1936, five years after the Akita. After WWII, there were hardly any Shibas left, but together dedicated breeders managed to save and restore the breed.

The Shiba Inu is a medium size, powerfully built and slightly rectangular spitz. The head is broad with a rounded muzzle. The ears are small, triangular and erect. The neck is powerful and muscular. The body should be tall, with deep chest, visible tuck up and straight topline. Good boning, with well angulated frontlegs and broad thighs. The tail is set high and carried curled or curved over the back. The coat should consist of a hard, straight topcoat and soft, thick undercoat.
