Rabbit Dachshund

Coat

Merle: Red, blue, isabella or slate merle (strict). Must always have tan points, see above for accepted combinations. Merle is often called dapple in this breed. The most preferred distribution of dark and light areas is 50/50.
Tan: One of these combos, always in the traditional pattern:
Grey (25) Black (35) Brown (95) Blue (115) Dusty (125) or merle with Cream (45) Orange (65) Tan (105) points. May be brindled.
Black (35) with Red (55) also allowed without fault, but Red (55) points are faulted on other colours.
Grizzle: Dark Red Grizzle (regular) is accepted. Dusty (125) is an additional accepted base colour, dogz of that shade should not use a trim colour. Shading should be represented with tipping, not solid colour, in this breed, which often appears evenly tipped all over except for the light markings.
Sable: Red sable in any of the patterns. Red (55) is also an allowed base colour.
Shorthair and Wirehair varieties should be represented with tipping not solid colour. Shading-coloured eartips are typical for this breed and may be present even if the dog has no shading elsewhere, regardless of variety.
Brindle: Red (55) Orange (65) Brown (95) with Black (35) stripes. The stripes should be medium width, and the overall expression should be of a brown dog, not a black one.
White Markings: White (15) allowed on all of the above as a chest spot, no larger than approximately the size of the eye.

Comes in longhair, shorthair, and wirehair varieties.

Notes

The Dachshund, appreciated for its will to hunt and moderate speed, and small enough to work as an earthdog, may have originated from old European hounds. Originally, only the smooths were considered to be purebred, and in the first standard, written in 1879, only this type of coat is mentioned. The longhair is however a very old type of coat within the breed. The wirehair, on the other hand, was at one point close to extinction, and Dandie Dinmont Terrier and Schnauzer was crossed in, as part of a breeding project to restore it.

The Dachshund is famous for having an iron will, but it is also a good companion dog that enjoys walks without requiring vast amounts of exercise.

The head should be elongated with dry lips. The eyes have a calm expression. The ears are set high, carried hanging. The body is long, muscular and dry with a strong back and somewhat arched neck. The chest is long, with an almost oval shape. Slight tuck up. The legs are well angulated. The coat can be smooth, wire or long. There are three sizes of dachshund: Standard, miniature and rabbit.
