Notes
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever was created during the 1800's in Chesapeake Bay, USA. It's said to originate from two Newfoundlands that were saved from a ship in 1807 and bought by George Low, who brought the dogs to Baltimore. The dogs were bred to local hunting dogs, such as Water Spaniels. They puppies were famous for their amazing endurance and efficiency, especially when it came to bird hunting. Cannons were used and killed several hundred birds with one shot, which required dogs that could retrieve for several hours.
The breed standard was written in 1887. The breed has gone through several phases where it has changed somewhat, but it has always been an excellent gundog.
The head of the Chesapeake should be broad with a clearly marked stop and powerful muzzle. The ears are small, hanging and carried loosely. The neck should be long and very powerful. The chest should be deep with a strong back, typical for this breed is that the rear should be placed higher than the shoulders. The tail should be carried slightly bent but not above the back. The coat is thick and quite short, straight on face and legs and wavy on the body.
