Notes
The Bouvier des Flandres belongs to a type of dog that has been around in Europe for hundreds of years. It has an unique herding technique - instead of nipping or barking, the bouvier more or less tackles the cattle to where it should go. It also guards the farm and has been used to pull milk wagons. During WWI, the Bouvier was trained as a military dog, but few dogs survived the war. Those that did are the ones that all modern Bouviers originate from.
In the breed's home countries (Belgium/France) it still has a good reputation as a military and police dog.
The overall impression of the Bouvier des Flandres should be a rather large, compact and powerful dog. The head is massive, with well developed beard and moustasches, slightly marked stop and energetic eyes. The ears are set high, either cropped or natural. The neck is relatively short and very powerful, the body should be almost square with a short and straight back and deep chest, with slight tuck up. The coat is wirey and scruffy with a lot of undercoat.
