Notes

The Aidi has been found in the Atlas mountains for hundreds of years. It may be related to European mountain dogs, which it resembles, but it is only found in the Atlas mountains in the north-west of Morocco. It has never been used as a herder, but only to guard and protect the flocks and the shepherd from wild animals.

The Aidi is rustic, robust, not very elegant but radiating confidence and power. It is powerful without being coarse or clumsy, with a thick coat. The head is cone-shaped and bear-like, with the body slightly rectangular and very compact. The topline is slightly lowered. The chest is deeper than it is broad, the paws round. The tail is heavily coated, carried lower, higher during movement but never above the back. The coat is thick and powerful, forming a ruff around the neck. Smooth coat is a disqualification.

This breed is a typical mountain dog, more of a watchdog than a herder, protecting its owner and his belongings. An aidi never takes a break from his job and is always ready to guard.
