Chinese Crested

Coat

Hairless

Solid: The hairless skin may cause the body colour to appear a different shade than on a coated dog. The base colour is determined by the colour of the coated areas (topknot, feet and tailtip), with the following combinations allowed:
Black: Black (35) coated areas with Grey (25) Brown (95) Blue (115) Dusty (125) hairless areas.
The coated areas may use Grey (25) Blue (115) instead to represent greying/faded black.
Liver: Red (55) Brown (95) coated areas with Cream (45) Dusty (125) hairless areas.
The coated areas may use Dusty (125) instead to represent greying/faded liver.
Red: Orange (65) Tan (105) coated areas with Grey (25) Cream (45) Orange (65) Tan (105) Dusty (125) or Pale Pink hairless areas.
Cream: White (15) Cream (45) Ivory (Texture) coated areas with Grey (25) Cream (45) Dusty (125) or Pale Pink hairless areas.
Any of the listed hairless colours above may also have partly or fully White (15) coloured coated areas without fault.
Tan: Coated areas use Grey (25) Black (35) Red (55) Brown (95) Blue (115) Dusty (125) with White (15) Cream (45) Orange (65) Tan (105) Ivory (Texture) in the traditional or saddle pattern.
The hairless areas use one of the hairless colours accepted for that base colour - refer to the Solid section for accepted combinations, with the exceptions of Grey (25) Dusty (125) which are not accepted tan point colours.
Sable: Any sable combination in any of the patterns for the coated areas, with the following corresponding hairless areas:
Red sable: Grey (25) Cream (45) Brown (95) Dusty (125)
Liver sable: Cream (45) Brown (95) Dusty (125)
White (15) Ivory (Texture) are additional allowed base colours for the coated areas for all Sables.
Masking: All of the above may be masked (standard mask), but masks in this breed are only visible on the coated areas (such as ears and tailtip), exception being in tanpoints (where the base colour may cover up the tan on the muzzle).
The masking colour is Grey (25) Black (35) Red (55) Brown (95) Blue (115) Dusty (125) and matches the pigment of the dog.
Masking on the ears may be present on only the eartips or on the whole ears.
White Markings: Allowed in any pattern including white all over.
White on coated areas is represented by White (15), while white on hairless areas is represented by Pale Pink, commonly appearing as spots. Such pale pink spots are especially common on the throat, front of chest, and legs, but may appear anywhere on the dog in any amount and do not need to follow an accepted white spotting pattern.
Solid Pale Pink with dalmatian-like spots of one of the accepted body colours is also accepted.
Pale Pink pigment spots may be combined with dark pigment spots - e.g. pale pink with darker pink spots.

Powderpuff

Solid: Grey (25) Black (35) Cream (45) Red (55) Orange (65) Brown (95) Tan (105) Blue (115)
Tan: Coated areas use Grey (25) Black (35) Red (55) Brown (95) Blue (115) Dusty (125) with White (15) Cream (45) Orange (65) Tan (105) in the traditional or saddle pattern.
Sable: Red or Liver sable in any of the patterns.
Red sables may have Grey (25) Blue (115) shading due to fading.
Liver sables may have Dusty (125) shading due to fading.
White (15) and Ivory (Texture) accepted as additional base colours in all sables.
Masking: All of the above may be masked (standard mask).
The masking colour is Grey (25) Black (35) Red (55) Brown (95) Blue (115) Dusty (125) and matches the pigment of the dog.
Masking on the ears may be present on only the eartips or on the whole ears.
White Markings: Allowed in any pattern including white White (15) all over.

Powderpuffs commonly have shaved muzzles and throats, and may use the same colour combinations as listed under Hairless on the muzzle (and front of throat, if the file allows it). See the Hairless section of the breed standard for accepted colour combinations on hairless/shaved areas.

Notes

Hairless dogs have been found in many parts of the world, including China. During the 1500's, this breed was sold and traded all over the world via Chinese ships. Upon reaching Britain in the late 1800's, the Chinese Crested was exhibited in London Zoo.

Entered in British dog shows between 1870-1904, the breed disappeared until re-introduced with American dogs. Today the Chinese Crested is found all over the world.

The Chinese Crested should appear small, gracious, happy-going and lively. The head is somewhat rounded with slight stop. The muzzle is tapering but not pointy, with dry lips. The longer the coat on top of the head, the better. The ears are large and set low. Always erect in the hairless dogs, the powderpuffs may have hanging. The neck is long, thin and beautifully arched with the head lifted high. The body should be rectangular, agile with a relatively deep chest and slight tuck up. The back should be straight. The tail is set high, carried up or down. The coat should only cover the last two-thirds in hairless dogs.

The coat can be either lacking except on the head, neck and tailtip, or the dog can be entirely covered in soft, silky fur, forming a characteristic topknot and known as the powderpuff variety.
