The Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, or 'Softie' as it's sometimes called, was once a common farmdog in Ireland, working as a ratter, guard dog, and whatever else it could help with. It wasn't until the 1930's that breeders tried to get it recognized, and it was recognized by the Irish Kennel Club in 1937. Today there is a distinct difference in coat type between American and European Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers.
The Softie should appear powerful, compact, well built and agile. The head is long with flat skull, marked stop and the muzzle somewhat longer than the skull. The head should appear powerful but not coarse. The ears are rather small and carried forward. They may be darker than the main shade of the coat. Compact, rather short body with deep chest and short back. Well angled legs. The coat is soft and silky, changing with the dog's age.
