Samoyed

The Samoyed originates from the north-western parts of Russia, Novaja Semlja, northern Komi, and the Gydanskij peninsula. It was kept a sled dog, but also as a reindeer herder and watchdog, just like the Sami's dogs (in fact, at one point this breed was counted as a Lapphund breed, it wasn't until 1927 that they were separated). The modern, white-coated Samoyed is mainly the result of European, and then mainly British, breeders. It reached Britain in the 1870s, and soon got popular, which it still is around the world. The Samoyed people's dogs could come in many sorts of colours, but show Samoyed are either white, or white with biscuit markings.

The Samoyed should be a short, slightly rectangular and arctic spitz. It is strong, elegant, agile, calm and confident. The head is powerful, wedge-shaped with clearly marked stop. The muzzle is deep and powerful, with the typical 'samoyed smile'. The ears have an alert expression, The ears are set high, rather small and triangular. The neck is of medium length and carried proudly. The body is slightly rectangular, deep and powerful with straight back and slight tuck up. The chest should be deep but not barrel-shaped. Good boning with straight frontlegs and well angulated hind. The tail is curved over he back or side during movement, may be hanging during rest. The coat is long, hard and standing out from the body. It is longer on the neck, shoulders and tail.
