Notes

There are three varities of Belgian Griffon: Belge, Brussels, and Branbancon. In some countries they are counted as one breed, in others they are divided into three. They originate from early ratters, once common in the city but even more so on farms. These dogs are closely related to the German Pinschers and Schnauzers, as well as the Dutch Smoushond.

When the interest for the Belgian Griffons awoke during the 1800s, the smallest dogs became the most popular and were bred to, among others, Affenpinscher and Pug. King Charles Spaniel was bred into get the pure red-coated dogs. The most common variety was the red Brussels Griffon, which was recognized in 1880, and it has not changed much in looks since then.

All of the Griffons should be small, short and square in shape, yet elegant and agile. The head is large and round with very short muzzle. The eyes are very large and should be clearly visible. The body is quite broad with deep chest. The coat is half long, thick and scruffy.
