Notes

Four wirehaired breeds of dog have been named after Vendée, which is located by the French west coast. This area is known for its thick underbrush, which requires coarse-haired hounds to protect them from injuries. The largest of these breeds is the Grand Griffon Vendeen, believed to originate from ancient Roman hounds. The short-legged varieties are appreciated among hunters on foot and used mainly for deer hunting. They are considered a good hunter choice though some claim that they are a bit on the stubborn side.

Sometimes, Petits and Grands are born in the same litter, even though the breeds have been separated for many years.

The Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen should appear short-legged, elongated and powerful. The frontlegs are straight. The head is elongated with soft ears set below the eyes. The tail is set high and carried in a curve. It has a longer muzzle, ears and tail, as well as longer back and coat, than the petit breed.
