Notes
The Beagle is believed to have been around in Britain for hundreds of years, and is most likely the oldest of the English hounds, but it is not know where its name comes from. It may be from older English 'begle', which in return comes from old French, 'beegeule', which translates to 'open throat'. Today the breed is popular around the world and kept not only as a hunter, but also as a show- and companion dog.
The Beagle is a compact and powerful breed. The head is somewhat elongated with a broad skull and marked stop. The eyes should have a mild expression. The ears are quite large, triangular and carried close to the head. The head should be carried high and proud. The chest is deep with slight tuck up, the back is short and strong. The tail is thick and set and carried high. The coat is short and thick.
