The Basset Hound is the heaviest of the Basset breeds, and is the result of a famous litter between a Basset Artésian Normand and a Bloodhound - a litter created 100 years ago with the help of artificial insemination, and born through a caesarean section!
The Basset Hound is a large dog with a small dog's legs, and is famous for its deep bark. Today it is mostly kept as a show- and companion dog, rather than hunter.
The Basset Hound should be clearly rectangular with a lot of substance, powerful, compact and agile. The head has a slight stop, with enough loose skin to form wrinkles, and a powerful muzzle. The eyes should have a calm expression. The ears are set low, very long and gradually tapering to the tips. The neck is muscular and rather long. The chest is deep and long, with straight topline. The legs are short but well angled. The coat is smooth, short and thick.
