Notes

The Kooikerhondje originate from the same dogs that later became toy breeds as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Ppillon, and Phalène - similarity which is still visible. The Kooikerhondje is a so-called tolling dog, which means that it plays by the shore, luring ducks within reach of the hunter. It was used long before guns, when nets were the only tools available for bird catching, and is one of the ingredients in the Canadian Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.

The Kooikerhondje should give the impression of a slightly rectangular dog with a good amount of coat. The head is rather broad with the muzzle and skull the same length, the muzzle well filled out. The eyes should have a friendly expression. The ears are set rather high and carried close to the head. The neck is strong and muscular. The body has a straight back, with well developed chest. Straight front legs and well angulated hind. The tail should be long enough to reach the hock.
