The Kerry Blue Terrier is a breed with many myths around it. It was originally a farm dog. The blue coat, according to the legend, was introduced via a blue-furred dog that was rescued from a ship in Kerry 1775. The first notes of the 'Blue Terrier' were written in Dublin 1876, but after that the breed was not seen in shown until 1913 in Listowel.
In 1920 a meeting was held to discuss the future of the breed, and a club was formed. The breed was recognized by the Irish Kennel Club two years later under the name 'Irish Blue Terrier', but the Brits called it 'Kerry Terrier', and the name was finally changed to 'Kerry Blue Terrier'.
The Kerry Blue Terrier should appear elegant, powerful with an alert and sharp expression. The head is balanced, long and rather thin with little stop and powerful muzzle. The ears have an intense expression, the ears are small and V-shaped. The neck is strong and slightly arched. The body is collected, short with straight back and deep chest. The tail is set high and carried straight up at an angle away from the back. The coat is soft, silky and wavy.
