Notes
This breed is always called Giant Schnauzer to avoid confusion with the other Schnauzer size variations. It is the youngest of the Schnauzers, and the first breed standard was written in 1923. It was created mainly in the Wüttemberg area and around Stuttgart, which was once a center for cattle driving. The Giant Schnauzer is believed to be the result of local scruffy sheepdogs bred to Standard Schnauzers. In the beginning, the breed was not popular at all as it didn't have any special use, but this changed when its abilities as a police and military dog were discovered.
The Giant Schnauzer should appear tall, courageous, with great endurance, agile and easy-to-train. The head is powerful with an elongated muzzle, the stop further marked by the eyebrows. The ears are set high, V-shaped and tipped over or cropped. The neck is powerful, dry and slightly arched. Deep chest with slight tuck up. The topline is slightly sloping, slightly bowed. The body should appear square in shape, with rather long legs. Good boning. The tail is set high, natural or docked. The coat is wirey, hard and thick.
