The English Pointer is believed to be related to the Spanish Pointer 'Perdiguero de Burgos' (which, however, used to be a lot heavier in build) as well as Portugese Pointing dogs that returned to Britain with soldiers after the war in 1713. It is not mentioned in literature until the late 1600's, but soon rose in popularity and in the middle of the 1700's it had become an etablished hunter.

The Pointer is a gundog that will freeze and 'point' at the prey, therefore its name. At the hunter's command, it will chase the bird into the air, then lay down as to avoid being shot.

The Pointer should appear symmetrical and harmonious with a noble build. It is speedy with good endurance and a sweet disposition.

The head is the trademark of the breed. Marked stop with a visible dish face. Eyes should have a gentle expression, ears are set rather high and of medium length. The neck is long, dry and muscular with a slight arch. The body should have a well developed chest and rather short back. The front legs are straight while the hind are well angulated. The tail is of medium length and carried like a continuation of the back, preferably not above the line of it. The coat is short, fine and hard to the touch.
