Notes

The Clumber Spaniel's history most likely began with the famous red and white dogs kept by the dukes of Marlborough on Blenheim castle, Woodstock, north-east of Oxford. The dogs were known as 'Marlborough Spaniel', 'Blenheim Spaniel' or 'Woodstock Spaniel'. Most of the time, each family had their own stock of dogs, which over time led to inbreeding problems. The Clumber was crossed to French and British spaniels, as well as French bassets, which gave it a look more similar to the modern breed. At least, this is what experts believe - no one knows for certain.

A Clumber won Best In Show at Crufts in 1991, and despite usually being kept as a companion dog today, it still has much of the hunting instinct intact and requires regular exercise and stimulation.

The Clumber should appear powerful, compact yet agile, radiating strength, calm and dignity. The head is square with marked stop and broad, heavy muzzle. The ears should be shaped like wine leaves. The neck is of medium length, thick and powerful. The body is long, heavy and low-legged, with deep chest and quite short legs. The coat is long, thick, silky and straight with a good amount of feathering. Solid white is preferred but orange or lemon markings are allowed.
