Trick Guide & References

Trick training is a wonderful part of the game, and offers a new way of bonding with your pixel petz. This guide aims to provide general trick training insights and complimentary visual animation references, supplementing the existing trick guides made by Spider and Thor and updating some gaps. A special shoutout to Reflet for all their work analyzing .pet files, giving us a glimpse into the mechanics of tricks! Details on trick titles & hosting trick shows can be found at UKC.

General Info on Trick Training

Cues are defined in this guide as the different gestures you can prompt tricks with, done by waggling the treat. There are 5 cues, as illustrated above - Up, Down, Left, Right and Toy.

For each of the cues labelled above, a pet has the capacity to learn 3 tricks. It is common practice however to fill all 3 slots with one trick, to guarantee it will be performed. Below is a tabulated example of what a pet's trick repertoire might look like for one treat category.

There are 5 categories of training treats from the original game (shown below), with trick slots allocated to each cue for that treat category (e.g for the Chicken treats → the Up cue → Cartwheel trick). Be aware that treats in the same category (e.g beef & bone treats ) will overlap each other's trick slots! The healthy treats cannot be used for trick training

In summary: there are 5 categories of treats in the original game that can be used to trick train. For each category, there are 5 cues you can prompt, and for each cue there are 3 potential slots for tricks. This means that if you're teaching one trick per cue/treat, the max no. of tricks a dog can learn at a time is 25 tricks (out of 36 total dog tricks). Catz have a total of 15 tricks.

Trick Summary

Dogz Tricks - 36

Note: Balance on Toy and Bounce on Toy are seperate tricks (same plan ID but different action ID), whereas the Nose Toss trick appears to be an advanced progression of the Nose Balance trick (both tricks have the same Plan ID and same Action ID). I have included the Nose Toss trick here for completeness, but it is not counted as a standalone trick.

Notes

  • For the Balance on Toy task, bigger dogz may have trouble balancing on smaller balls (e.g the star ball)
  • For the Nose Balance & Nose Toss tasks, using toyz/balls bigger than the star ball & blue/red ball (such as the soccer ball) results in the toy overlapping the dog's muzzle.

Tricks & Tidbits

  • If you seek to maximise your trick learning capacity, Shaina @ Kizmet has created a range of treatboxes here with various flavours, which allows 8 categories of trainable treats! I also use the Kizmet cheese curd treats to train instead of the cheese block, due to its convenience 🧀
  • Note that petz' gazes can be oriented differently for the same task - at times facing the camera, and at other times facing straight ahead! Sometimes they can make cartoon-like "bug" eyes. Give the cue again if you wish for a different gaze.
  • I highly recommend recording tricks as you train. Jotting down the treat used, cues (Left, Up, etc.) + corresponding tricks can allow you to keep track of which treat + cue "slot" the trick occupies, and avoid accidentally overwriting a trick a pet has learnt. Below are some examples of how I kept notes of my petz' learnt tricks:
  • There are lots of items that can be engaged with for the Toy tricks, not just the ball toys! Dogz can balance on & toss the fishbowl, treatboxes and even ... cheese? It's rather amusing.

Teaching your companions new tricks can be a wonderful petzy pastime, and I hope this guide aids in your training endeavours. Don't forget to give your petz lots of cuddles & rewards, and of course, breaks are an important part of learning. Have fun! 🐾
